It is a mining town that had its heyday in colonial times, it had up to 20,000 inhabitants; however, its population decreased in the nineteenth century because of the closure of the mines. It was called Real de San Sebastián, a name it had until the beginning of the 19th century. In the middle of the nineteenth century it was already known as San Sebastián. In 1983 it acquired its current name. Its flora consists mainly of pine, oak, oak, parota, ash, masahuite and pochote.
