National Park & Biosphere Reserve

Explore the "Mexican Galapagos" with Biologists

Premium Snorkel Bird Sanctuary Authorized Tour

Located north of Banderas Bay, the majestic Marietas Islands National Park is a must-see Protected Natural Area. Our team of Biologists will guide you on this Responsible Tourism expedition to discover what nature has prepared for you.

This archipelago is home to the iconic Hidden Beach (Playa del Amor) and a critical habitat for the Blue-footed Booby, gulls, herons, and frigatebirds. Underwater, you will dive into a true marine aquarium full of tropical fish, corals, sponges and, with luck, turtles, giant manta rays, and dolphins.

Transparency regarding "Hidden Beach"

We guarantee spots for the Hidden Beach. For conservation, CONANP limits access to only 116 people per day (distributed among 173 boats, determined by Carrying Capacity).

  • Access depends on the tide and sea currents. Rangers confirm sea conditions at the moment; on average, there is a 95% success rate.
  • Vital requirement: It is mandatory to KNOW HOW TO SWIM well (you swim through a rocky arch and there can be currents).
  • Permitted age to enter Hidden Beach: 10 to 65 years old. (Younger children or those over 65 can visit the rest of the Park sites).
  • Maximum regulatory stay time inside the beach is around 15 to 20 minutes (effective time), as rangers count 30 minutes from the moment you leave the boat.
  • Closed: Mondays and Tuesdays.

Why book with Explora Vallarta?

  • Responsible Tourism: We respect the carrying capacity and Park rules.
  • Small Groups: Lower environmental impact and personalized attention.
  • Expert Staff: Guided by certified Marine Biologists.
  • Conservation Support: We collaborate with park rangers in cleaning and monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the probability of entering the Hidden Beach?

Yes, your spot is 100% guaranteed with us, the authority releases 116 spots per day and we ensure we have those spots. Final access to swim through the arch depends exclusively on sea conditions (tide and safety) dictated by park rangers at the moment. Historically, our groups succeed 95% of the time due to tide management.

Can I go if I don't know how to swim?

For the Classic Tour (bird watching and snorkeling with life jacket), YES you can go. But to enter the Hidden Beach it is an indispensable requirement to know how to swim without assistance, as you cross a tunnel where occasionally there are currents.

Why is sunscreen not allowed?

Chemicals in sunscreens (even biodegradable ones) severely damage corals and water quality. We recommend wearing a long-sleeved swim shirt with UV protection (rash guard) and a hat.

Is there a bathroom on the Islands?

No, the islands are a pristine reserve with no construction. We recommend using the restroom before setting sail.

What is the difference between Explora Vallarta and large agencies?

Although there are popular options, our big difference is intimacy and direct contact. We are not a massive corporation; we are a local family of Marine Biologists. With us, you avoid the crowds of big (massive) boats, guaranteeing small groups, personalized attention from owners, and the certainty that your money directly supports science and local families.

What is the best time to visit Marietas Islands?

Undoubtedly you can go all year round, the summer-autumn and part of winter season is beautiful for cooling off in crystal clear waters (May to January); from February to April the water is a bit colder. If you are looking for a double experience, from December to March we combine the tour with Humpback Whale watching, which often play near the islands.

How difficult is it to enter the Hidden Beach?

It requires moderate physical effort. To enter, you must jump from the boat and swim approximately 75 meters through a natural volcanic rock tunnel. Because there are currents and waves can be strong, wearing a life jacket and helmet (provided by us) is mandatory.

Can I see the Blue-footed Booby?

Yes! Marietas Islands are one of the few places in the world where this species nests. Since we are guided by biologists, we will take you to the best sighting points to observe their mating and nesting rituals without disturbing their habitat.

Why are water shoes not allowed on the beach?

As part of our commitment to conservation and CONANP rules, footwear is not allowed inside the Hidden Beach and in other zones of the two Islands. This prevents visitors from accidentally stepping on and damaging coral colonies or transporting microorganisms or seeds foreign to the island's ecosystem.

Is it worth going if I don't enter the Hidden Beach?

Absolutely. Many visitors think the beach is the only thing, but Marietas Islands offer an incredible biodiversity spectacle. Snorkeling in coral reefs, exploring sea caves, and sighting exotic birds make the expedition fascinating in itself.

Where do the tours depart from?

Our main expeditions sail from Punta de Mita, a strategic point as we are 10 minutes from the Islands. Sailing from Puerto Vallarta takes more than an hour of travel and many people arrive seasick, whereas with us the experience is super comfortable.

How many islands make up the National Park?

Marietas Islands National Park consists mainly of two volcanic islands: Isla Larga and Isla Redonda. Additionally, the complex includes two islets and several rocky outcrops. Each has its own ecological personality; for example, the famous Love Beach is found on Isla Redonda, while Isla Larga is the preferred nesting site for thousands of birds.

What protection categories does Marietas Islands National Park have?

This archipelago has three protection levels that endorse its global importance: 1. National Park: Federal category in Mexico protecting its biodiversity since 2005. 2. Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO): Designated within the MAB program for its balance between nature and human presence. 3. RAMSAR Site: International recognition as a wetland of global importance for marine life and migratory birds.
